PRECIOUS BLOOD
“You were redeemed not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the Precious Blood of Christ”
1 Peter 1:18-19
The month of July is dedicated to the Precious Blood.
St Peter reminds us of its importance of when he writes. “You were redeemed not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the Precious Blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:18-19). As our Lord Himself said, His blood would be shed for “the forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:28).
The Feast of the Precious Blood was instituted by Pope Pius IX in 1849 in Thanksgiving for the Victory of the Papal and French Army over the revolutionary forces which had driven him from Rome. Pius XI in 1934 raised it to the rank of double of the 1st class to mark the nineteen hundredth anniversary of our Lord’s death.
The liturgy transcends the circumstances of the feast’s institution and, recalls all that we owe to the Precious Blood of the Redeemer. Recalling the scene on Calvary and the piercing of our Saviour’s Side, the Mass emphasises especially its significance for our Salvation let us with boundless gratitude venerate the Precious Blood on of our Saviour which the offers to God upon the Altar.
Jesus, at the Last Supper, ascribes to it the same life-giving power that belongs to His flesh. The Apostles, St Peter (1 Peter 1:2, 19), St John (1 John 1:7; Apocalypse 1:5 etc.), and above all St Paul (Romans 3:25; Ephesians 1:7; Hebrews 9:10) regard it as synonymous with Jesus’s Passion and Death, the Source of Redemption.
I. THE CHAPLET OF THE PRECIOUS BLOOD
This devotion consists of Seven Mysteries in which we meditate on the seven main sheddings of the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ. The Our Father is said five times after each mystery except for the last, when it is said three times—in all thirty-three times in honour of the thirty-three years of Our Savior’s life on earth.

II. THE CHAPLET OF THE PRECIOUS BLOOD

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried;
He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

THREE OFFERINGS OF THE PRECIOUS BLOOD
At the prayer of several devout members of the Pious Union erected in Rome, under the protection of the Immaculate Conception of our Blessed Lady, the same Pope Pius IX, by an autograph Rescript of June 18, 1851, kept in the Segretaria of the S. Congr. of Indulgences, granted certain indulgences to all who say the following offering of the Precious Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ to the Most Holy Trinity, in thanksgiving for the gifts and privileges with which the most holy Virgin Mary, Mother of God, was enriched, most especially those which she received in her Immaculate Conception.
- An indulgence of 300 days every time they are said with contrition, together with the accompanying prayer to the Blessed Virgin.
A plenary indulgence to all who say them every day for an entire month, to be gained on that day when, after Confession and Communion, they shall visit a church or public oratory, and pray there for a time according to the intention of his Holiness.

300 days Indulgence
PROMISES
To Those Who Devotedly pray the Chaplet of the Precious Blood
I promise to protect any person who devoutly prays this Chaplet against evil attacks.
I will guard his five senses.
I will protect him from sudden death.
Twelve hours before his death, he will drink My Precious Blood and eat My Body.
Twenty-four hours before his death, I will show him My Five Wounds that he may feel a deep contrition for all his sins and have a perfect knowledge of them.
Any person who makes a novena with it will get their intentions. His prayer will be answered.
I will perform many wonderful miracles through it.
Through it, I will destroy many secret societies and set free many souls in bondage, by My Mercy.
Through it, I will save many souls from Purgatory.
I will teach him My way, he who honours My Precious Blood through this Chaplet.
I will have Mercy on them who have mercy on My Precious Wounds and Blood.
Whoever teaches this prayer to another person will have an indulgence of four years.
Devotion to the Drops of Blood Lost by our Lord Jesus Christ on His Way to Calvary
St Elizabeth, Queen of Hungary, with St Matilda and St Bridget, wishing to know something of the Passion of Jesus Christ, offered fervent and special prayers upon which Our Lord revealed to them:
To all the faithful who shall recite for 3 years, each day, 2 Our Fathers, 2 Hail Marys and 2 Glory Bes in honour of the drops of Blood I lost,
I will concede the following five Graces:
The plenary indulgence and remittance of your sins. You will be free from the pains of Purgatory. If you should die before completing the said 3 years, for you it will be the same as if you had completed them. It will be upon your death the same as if you had shed all your blood for the Holy Faith. I will descend from Heaven to take your soul and that of your relatives, until the fourth generation.
